</html>";s:4:"text";s:8065:"The trial and punishment of Ruth Ellis became notorious as she was the last woman in England to be executed. When I began researching the book, everyone I discussed it with either already knew the very basic facts of Ruth’s story, and at the very least that she was the last woman to be hanged in England. Her trial opened on 20 June and the jury took just 14 minutes to find her guilty of murder. This site details most criminal executions carried out in Britain between 1100 and 1964. Ellis was sentenced to death at the Old Bailey for shooting her lover, 25-year-old racing driver David Blakely, outside the Magdala public house in north London on Easter Sunday. I think her name is still quite familiar, to be honest. Her circumstances were such that the question of diminished responsibility was raised in her defence, and the Ellis case did much to advance the abolition of the death penalty in Britain, which finally came to pass in 1965. Home Welcome to British Executions. Where did she get that from? Some people broke through police cordons to bang on the jail's doors, calling for Ellis to pray with them, but by 2330 BST the crowd had dispersed. As for Desmond Cussen: he emigrated to Australia and opened a flower shop there. And what became of her family and the others who were part of the story? Ruth was buried in the confines of Holloway Prison after her execution, sharing her unmarked grave with four other women who had been hanged there. I think any case is always immeasurably more complex than it is presented in newspaper columns and headlines. The existing Open Comments threads will continue to exist for those who do not subscribe to Independent Premium. Too bad. Although she obviously had a good degree of self-awareness and knew what David was and always would be, she truly loved him and for a time believed they had a future together. It allows our most engaged readers to debate the big issues, share their own experiences, discuss real-world solutions, and more. If one may phrase it this way, were people shocked for the right reasons? Hostessing in the clubs in which Ruth worked was quite straightforward — or it should have been, but there was Morris Conley to contend with, and he was quite a character. The case has increased debate about British criminal justice and the death penalty. They were usually paid badly and relied on tips to make ends meet, but were given a dress allowance so that they could look as alluring as possible. Was it usual for “real” relationships to evolve? What became of Ruth Ellis’s body after her hanging? I think other adaptations have also done her a disservice. Why wasn’t she more cynical about Blakely? He could do nothing wrong and I trusted him implicitly.’ Ruth had an alcoholic, abusive father, and then she had two children from marriages with two different men that both fell apart — one from bigamy and abandonment, the second from alcoholism and domestic violence. The girls who worked for Morris Conley, like Ruth, were expected to sleep with the clients if that was asked of them, and often had to sleep with ‘Morrie’ and his less than respectable friends too. It was also Pierrepoint who executed Ellis, of course, and she appears in that film played by Mary Stockley. That said, I’m very interested in the barrister’s attempt to frame its insanity defense around feminine hysteria — “the effect of jealousy upon a female mind can so work as to unseat the reason and can operate to a degree in which a male mind is quite incapable of operating.” This was bound to be undermined by Ruth’s own calm and the statements about her intent to kill that she gave to police and in court. I think part of the difficulty is obviously that the defence of diminished responsibility was not introduced in the courts here until 1957 — largely as a direct result of this particular case. 1860: Albert Hicks, the last pirate hanged by the US? Please be respectful when making a comment and adhere to our Community Guidelines. Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be hanged in Britain, continues to inspire a morbid fascination in the public imagination. A sad end to all involved. Have her previous biographies and screen portrayals fed those misconceptions? I really think that he was as confused and tormented by everything that was happening as a result of Ruth’s and David’s relationship as Ruth herself. Episode one of The Ruth Ellis Files aired on BBC4 last night and is available to watch now on BBC iPlayer. A new BBC4 documentary is set to reignite interest in … The jury, which never heard that Blakely regularly beat his killer (including once to induce a miscarriage), needed 14 minutes to convict her. The defence of diminished responsibility did not then exist. England was distinctly class-led at the time and when the case hit the headlines, she was described as a working-class floozie who attached herself to the upper-class David Blakely purely in order to hoist herself up the class ladder. Murderers Gwynne Evans and Peter Allen, who killed a friend for money, were the last criminals to be executed in the UK 50 years ago, but historians say … Yesterday, Ellis was visited by her mother, her solicitor J G Bickford and her friend, Jacqueline Dyer, within an hour of hearing there would be no reprieve. In 1971, when the prison was demolished and rebuilt, her body was released to her son for burial. Five bullets: the last, a coup de grace. And it’s not just the perpetrators themselves – their blank expressions staring back at us from mugshots taken half a century ago – but the executioners too. Was it the case that the law at the time didn’t have the instruments to situate Ruth’s context and state of mind, other than hysterical/not? There are girls all over the world doing very similar jobs today — from London to Japan and everywhere in between too, no doubt. "She killed a man who had been abusing her … They argued Ellis was suffering "battered woman syndrome". 1955: Ruth Ellis hanged for killing lover, 2001: Family demand inquiry into police shooting, 1993: Green light for Manchester Olympics. It was her death on the scaffold that gave the abolition movement its emotional spur. You can find our Community Guidelines in full here. The Ruth Ellis Files: A Very British Crime Story (BBC4). That couldn’t have been further from the truth; if she was only interested in using men to better herself socially, she would surely have married her sometime-lover Desmond Cussen, who was a much steadier prospect with money and property and who wanted very much to marry her. She died of cancer at the age of only 50. The last woman hanged in Ireland and the second of the 20th century was 31-year-old Annie Walshe from Co Limerick. 1918: Private David Stevenson, repeat deserter, 1616: "A gentellwoeman" by exposure, for a eunuch liaison, 1989: Arnaldo Ochoa and Tony de la Guardia, 1882: Thomas Egan: 3 tries, 2 ropes, 1 innocent man, 1915: George Joseph Smith, Brides in the Bath murderer, 1790: Thomas Bird, the first federal execution under the U.S. constitution, 1676: George Bromham and Dorothy Newman, on the Combe Gibbet, 1843: Jacob West, Ridge-Watie faction assassin, 1614: Magdalena Weixler, “my innocence will come to light”, 1992: Sukhdev Singh Sukha and Harjinder Singh Jinda, Operation Blue Star avengers, 1980: Necdet Adalı and Mustafa Pehlivanoğlu, September 12 coup sacrifices, 1938: Adam “Eddie” Richetti, Pretty Boy Floyd sidekick, 1546: Jorge Robledo, Popayan conquistador, 1944: Roger Bushell and others for the Great Escape, 1565: Jean Ribault and the Huguenot colonists of Fort Caroline.
