To stand the best chance of ranking at the top of Google, you should create the type of content that people are looking for. That’s because most people prefer to click organic results. That means you bid on the keywords that you want to show up for in Google. Google search ads work on a pay per click (PPC) basis. For example, the three top-ranking pages for “paleo diet” all talk about foods to eat. I prefer Serpstat for this work, but you should use whichever tool you're most comfortable with (both SEMrush and Ahrefs also provide solid keyword-research features). Step 1: Determine the Queries Best Suited to Your Topic. Look into your competitors’ backlinks to find sites that feature sites similar to your own, and seek out opportunities to promote your content on these viable sources. Here’s one example we found from our search: You can see that the post includes the phrase “SEO checklist” but it doesn’t link anywhere. Scroll down the list of all the provided keyword strings and pick the ones that you feel suit your blog best. Google talks about them here, and we also found a clear positive correlation between backlinks and organic traffic in our study of over one billion pages. There’s no denying that you need it to soar through rankings. You can sort all the results to see the "easiest" queries on top to focus on those: 3. Set up a system that would allow you to record questions your customers are asking and the struggles they are having on a regular basis; then, turn to that archive whenever you are working on your content editorial calendar. But if you put in the work, you can learn how to get to the top of Google search results and spark a steady flow of traffic. First, make sure that your page actually provides the information that Google wants to show in the snippet. Bookmark it and keep it for reference. For example, we rank second for “google search operators” but don’t own the snippet. If you want to know how to get to the top of Google search results, you need to know your current rankings and how users interact with your site. How much value can that placement add to the effort to generate organic traffic? If you consistently publish content on your site, you have more pages available to get to the top of Google search results for various keywords. If things look difficult at this stage, it’s probably best to pursue a different keyword—at least if you want a chance of ranking in the short-to-medium term. When your webpage gets the nod from Google and ends up being selected for the Knowledge Graph (let's say), you get top-of-the-page organic placement and all the benefits that such a coveted position offers. For example, if you’re a plumber in London, you might want to show up when people search for “plumber near me” or “london plumber.” Most people click the first result, so appearing at the top usually means more traffic, leads, and customers. But your content has to be accurate and helpful to outrank your competition. Type in your core term (i.e., the main topic of your site) and then use filters to find queries that already trigger featured snippets: Filter > Special elements in SERP > Featured Snippets. Maybe sooner than you think. Keywords that express pretty much the same ideas are noted and used in-content if possible. Track your efforts with Google Analytics to find the on-page elements you need to change to gain a higher ranking in the SERPs. How to Earn Your Spot in Google Featured Snippets.
