I see that there are two editions, this one, which is for adults, and another one just for kids: Well, it took me four months but I did finally finish this book! I found this refreshing, living in a society where we tend to accumulate and hoard possessions and compete with each other, and where families are often fractured and family values lost as a result of this. He knows it will potentially destroy his mentor's future, he knows it may mean never being able to see his family again, or even them being hurt because of his actions, but he goes ahead and does it anyway. I read this book in a little under 24 hours, almost unable to put it down. "Mao's Last Dancer" is a film about the true story of the Chinese ballet dancer Li Cunxin. Mao's Last Dancer tells the tale of Li Cunxin (Chi as an adult, Guo Chengwu as a teenager, Huang Wenbin as a child), born into poverty in a Qingdao village, and at the age of 11 selected by Madame Mao's cultural advisers to enroll in her Beijing Dance Academy. I highly recommend! [His marriage to Elizabeth, for example, I saw as incredibly selfish. The way Cunxin uses drive and discipline to escape his parent's fate and sheer determination to get him there, is extremely inspiring and frankly, makes me feel inadequate in my response to difficulty! He told me I would like it and find it fascinating. I knew so little about Chinese culture when I read this book. Beresford's direction married to the acting and dancing ability of Chi Cao result in a movie about dance but that theme is only the canvas upon which this moving and quite dramatic story unfolds. Though occasionally sentimental, it's a fascinating story of cultural, artistic, and political discovery - whether you're a ballet fan or not! I read this as an eight year old (the adult version, not the young reader's edition) and I still treasure it to this very day. Three stars. As a former ballerina for Houston Ballet, I couldn't wait to see this movie and how that time period would be shown. The best I've thus far seen in '10. But towards the end of the story, when he re-visits his family for the first time, you begin to understand it all a little better. Vicky recommended the book. The story of Li Cunxin is amazing. There were interesting parts and humorous parts, but a bit too meandering for my taste. At the start of the film, I could not believe that so many hugely dramatic instances could flow from the life of a young man born into less than salubrious circumstances in rural China. Western viewers will see these scenes in the schools as more indoctrination than teaching, but the contrast of the two worlds, that of the U.S. and China, are quite fascinating. Li Cunxin overcomes life's challenges and through sheer discipline, drive and the motivation to break through the shackles of communism, does just that. There's so much about his situation at that time that I couldn't possibly comprehend. Dulce Suenos! I rented it out knowing just a little bit about it but not knowing that the movie is based on an autobiography of the main character. I just learned this was made into a movie and I look forward to seeing the adaptation. Li Cunxin (pronounced “Lee Schwin Sing”) is a remarkable man borne of a remarkable story. In his runaway best selling autobiography, Mao' s Last Dancer, Li recounts his determination, perseverance, vision, courage and hard work, and in particular, the sacred family values and integrity that he learned in poverty-stricken China, which. Mao's Last Dancer Mao's Last Dancer is a fantastic book. I saw the movie first and I found the book just as fascinating. Bruce Greenwood, which I like very much, plays the role of the Houston Ballet Director with absolute perfection. It was ok. In this memoir, Li writes of an impoverished childhood in rural China in the 60's and 70's under the Mao Zedong regime. A remarkable life and one to be admired. A story of sacrifice and success, endurance and emotion, of family and friendship, Mao's Last Dancer is a contrast of two worlds, simply told but yet moving and motivating. I think not. March 1st 2005 He fights through many barriers until at last he succeeds what he wants. I had not even heard of this film until I saw a local ad for it. There are more elegantly written memoirs, but the story is riveting, including the role the elder George and Mrs. Bush played in his life (Barbara Bush was a patron of the Houston Ballet). Mix Billy Elliott with Torn Curtain and you’ll have some of the tale in very broad outline.Born in 1961, Li lived his early years under the shadow of Mao’s Great Leap Forward, which had impoverished the already poor countryside to an almost unbelievable extent. It makes you think how many things every day we take for granted. Start by marking “Mao's Last Dancer” as Want to Read: Error rating book. Enter Bruce Beresford. Personally, the one message that stood out most for me was how loving the Li family was, and how they looked out for each other. I saw the movie first and I found the book just as fascinating. Little did I know then, but by fate I had married a rare jewel, the most precious jewel I could ever wish for. This is not the type of book I normally pick up, but after reading the first through chapters through my email book club, I requested it from the library. I treasured and loved her from the time I lifted her veil. I now see how the Chinese are the best in gymnastics and other events they train for. Add any text here or remove it. Nothing is impossible. A moving tale that captures the beauty and inspiration of a man forced to make extraordinary decisions, inspiring story and a truly brilliant movie, A beautiful personal movie of two cultures and ballet, Fantastic True Story of a Chinese Ballet Dancer. Instead, seduced by the shopping malls and high rise of Houston as well as by a young American dancer, and outraged when he discovers the Party has lied to him about America, he defects, causing a minor diplomatic incident and cutting himself off for the time being at least from his family. Li Cunxin narrates his story in a matter-of-fact fashion that comes off as incredibly naive or coolly detached. Born in a commune in northeast China, Li's impoverished family struggled to put food on the table, making sacrifices for each other as the bare essentials for basic living were virtually nonexistent. First of all, I am interested in Chinese culture and history and in my university classes, we were recently talking a lot about the era of Mao. Some of it was repetitive as the author seemed to really want to get certain points across. Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account. The story of a mainland Chinese 11 year old boy, supposedly forever indoctrinated by daily school- taught commie propaganda garbage,is chosen to attend a special school to be trained for ballet. I don't normally watch many movies about ballet, I respect it as an art form but as a guy, just don't "get it". It looks like nothing was found at this location. November book group choice. I won't retell the story. He is played magnificently by Chi Cao (as an adult), who, I understand, is a well known Chinese dancer in his own right. So it was really insightful for me to listen to a true account of what it was like for this starving child of China. Whilst some o. Hi Livia! I also didn't know about the book. The true story of a boy who escaped poverty in rural China to become one of the world's greatest dancers. Second, I saw that Kyle MacLachlan and Joan Chen would be starring in this movie and I both adored them in the legendary Twin Peaks series and thought it would be interesting to see them come back together for another movie. This is a true story of a real person who is still alive and riveted me because he was growing up when I was and living this amazingly different life over there in China. This book is written in a simple style, yet is still incredibly inspiring and thought provoking with its glimpses into communism in China and the stark differences with the west. Finished Mao's Last Dancer today. But after watching the movie, I have to say I loved it. Meanwhile he secretly dates and falls in love with the dancer Elizabeth Mackey (Amanda Schull). His love for ballet is evident on every page. When Chairman and Madame Mao started their "cultural revolution" and decided to revive the Peking Dance Academy, they sent representatives throughout the country to find promising musical and artistic talent specifically from the children of peasants, workers, and soldiers. He overcomes homesickness, lack of mot. The resulting movie is far, far more complex than I thought as I entered the theatre. Communism vs. Democracy, interesting that a movie about ballet can present this issue in such a clear light. Just let it be said, that at the performance I saw, most of the audience sat through the credits. Loved the film. The memories just come rolling back ... A job well done, Li. So it was really insightful for me to listen to a true account of what it was like for this starving child of China. One clever element of this film is the way in which various people who are significant in Li Cunxin's life, tell him stories with a message.
